Mayor Broome Should Apologize

A year ago today, Mayor Broome chastised former Baton Rouge Police Union President Mr. Stewart when he predicted the murder rate in Chicago would soon be coming to Baton Rouge.  Unfortunately his prediction came true.

2017 MURDER RATE PER 100,000

Chicago = 23.85

Baton Rouge = 36.78

Here is a link to the original story that aired on WBRZ one year ago today.   Why do you think Mr. Stewart was able to predict the drastic increase in homicides?

Attempted Home Burglary

A neighbor near the corner of Claycut and Blanchard reported an attempted burglary this morning (2/18/15) between 9:15 and 9:20 a.m..  The burglar kicked in the back door and set off the alarm.  Fortunately they fled as soon as the alarm was activated and nothing was stolen.

I have also heard from several neighbors within the past week who reported a young black male trying to get people to allow him to clean their house.  From what I’ve been told, he was very pushy.  I have no idea if he is related to the incident that occurred today.  However, please be cautious and report any suspicious activity to the police at 389-2000.  Whoever attempted to break into this house today, will probably try again very soon.

2015 Louisiana Marathon

The Louisiana Marathon ran through our neighborhood again this year and the weather was perfect!  I really enjoyed watching the runners and admire their training.  A special thanks to those of you that took the time to show your support.  The following link includes pictures taken in our neighborhood (Webb Park/Steele/Walnut Hills) during the marathon.  Enjoy!

Vehicle Burlgaries

A neighbor who lives on Hundred Oaks between Steele Blvd and Ramsey had their vehicle burglarized early Monday morning (11/24/14).  Here is a video from a security camera that captures the burglary suspect in action.  Please contact the police at 389-2000 or send me an email (webbneighbors@cox-internet.com) if you recognize this individual.

There were also two other vehicle burglaries reported around the same time.  A laptop computer and briefcase were stolen from a vehicle on Steele Blvd. between Broussard and Claycut.  Another vehicle was burglarized on Longwood between Broussard and Claycut.

Please be extra careful as we enter the holiday season.  Don’t leave anything valuable in your vehicle that may tempt a burglar.

Man Hunt in the Webb Park Area

I have received information from multiple sources that there is currently an escaped “work release” inmate from the department of corrections in our neighborhood.  He was last seen in the Valley Park area heading towards Longwood and Woodside.  There is a helicopter and police officers with dogs searching for him.  He is described as a black male with a white shirt and blue jeans.  It’s my understanding he is not a “violent” offender if he is allowed to work in this capacity.  Please use this information to be careful and secure your house.  I have tried to call the Baton Rouge City Police department to verify this information, but they were unable to provide any details.  However, this information comes from reliable sources.  It’s better to be safe than sorry.   webbneighbors@cox-internet.com

Home Burglaries

I received a report that a house on Richland between Broussard and Claycut was burglarized this morning (3/13/14).  The burglars broke through a window to enter the home.  Apparently they were only interested in jewelry and prescription drugs.

I also received an email that a house on Ingleside (near Woodside) was burglarized yesterday (3/12/14).  The burglars broke through a window to gain entry.  They stole money and a laptop computer.

If you see anything suspicious, call the police at 389-2000.  And don’t forget to take pictures with your phone, if possible.

Attempted Home Burglary – Avondale

I received a report from a neighbor that there was an attempted home burglary today (3/6/14) on Avondale around 10:19 a.m..  The suspects entered through a back gate and tried to kick in the back door.  However, they were unable to kick in the door and were hopefully scared away when the security alarm was activated.  A neighbor reportedly saw a black male and female leaving the house in an older black two door Accord.  Please contact the police at 389-2000 if you saw anything suspicious.

Letter to Police Chief Dabadie – Number of Patrol Officers

Dear Chief Dabadie,

There have been about ten burglaries in my neighborhood (Webb Park Area) within the last month. The purpose of this letter is to find out if you intend to implement a new policy that was initiated by Chief White, putting more officers on patrols in our neighborhood. Approximately one year ago, Chief White explained how the Baton Rouge Police Department would increase the number of officers assigned to the uniform patrol division.

Jan. 16th, 2013. The Advocate. Chief White stated, “The department will achieve an unprecedented level of “boots on the ground” by retaining in its patrol division all 33 graduates of the recent 78th Basic Academy, White said, and by not transferring current patrol officers into other divisions once the recruits complete field training”.

In 2012 there were a total of 411 officers assigned to the uniform patrol division. Therefore, with the addition of the 78th Academy, the 411 would increase to 444 (411+33) uniform patrol officers.

Then Chief White explained how the BRPD would add even more officers to the uniform patrol division with the addition of the 79th Academy. “It had been the department’s practice to transfer about 30 veteran officers from patrol after new officers finish training, keeping the size of the patrol division the same, even as the city’s population has grown and demands for services have increased”, White said. The chief said the department will apply the same practice with the 79th Basic Academy, a class scheduled to begin in February that is expected to add 25 to 30 new officers in patrol”.

Therefore 411 (in 2012) + 33 (78th Academy) + 27 (79th Academy) = 471

With the addition of the 78th and 79th Academies, the number of Uniform Patrol Officers should have increased by approximately 60, for a total of 471. However the number of officers currently assigned to the uniform patrol division is 417, only 6 more than in 2012.

Will you implement the new policy that Chief White started to increase the number of “boots on the ground” patrolling our neighborhood? Thank you in advance for your time.
